G is for Gnome

A gnome in mythology is a small, humanoid creature that lives underground. In more common use, garden gnomes are often used to decorate people's gardens. They are small, usually made from ceramic and are generally wear red pointed hats.

H is for Handle

A handle is something that is designed for you to hold onto with your hand. Doors have handles so you can open them, and suitcases have handles so you can pick them up easily. Another word for a door handle is a doorknob.

H is for Hearth

A hearth is the floor of a fireplace. The hearth usually is larger than the fireplace, and makes a small step in the front of the fireplace. It is there to protect the floor around the fireplace from burning embers.

K is for Knick-knack

A knick knack is another name for an ornament or trinket. For example, "look at all the knick-knacks she has on her shelf".

K is for Knob

A knob is a tool used to aid in the opening and closing of something, such as a door or a drawer. A knob is often rounded to make it easier to grasp and turn.

M is for Mat

A mat is a piece of fabric, usually made from something quite firm like woven rushes. Mats come in different sizes depending on what they are used for. Doormats are used to wipe your feet on outside a door, placemats are used for protecting a table as you eat, and various sized floor mats are used in indoor sports as a soft surface over a hard floor.

M is for Mirror

A mirror is something that lets you see your reflection. You can use a mirror so you can see yourself brushing your hair, or to see behind you when you are driving a car.
Not all animals know that their reflection is them, the only animals that do know are elephants, chimpanzees, dolphins, magpies and orangutans.
A mosquito net is fabric with holes woven into it that lets light and air through but keeps mosquitoes and other insects out. Mosquito nets are commonly seen draped over beds, to keep people from being bitten when they are asleep.

O is for Ornament

An ornament is something that is purely to look good, or make something else look good. Ornaments are hung on Christmas trees at Christmas time. Some cars have hood ornaments. The picture is of a stone garden ornament.

P is for Pedestal

A pedestal is something that raises something else up, usually for display. Pedestals are often used to display statues and sculptures.

P is for Potpourri

Potpourri is a mixture of dried flowers and leaves that are naturally scented. It can be kept in a bowl, or tied into small bags. Ingredients for potpourri can include lavender, cinnamon, dried lemon or orange peel, rosemary, dried rose flowers or cedar.

R is for Rack

A rack is a set of shelves that are not solid. Most racks are made from a simple frame of wood or metal.

R is for Rug

A rug is a piece of small carpet that doesn't cover the entire room. Some people call rugs carpets too. They often have a fringe around the edge, or a bright pattern on them. Rugs are usually bought to look good.

S is for Sculpture

A sculpture is something made by people that looks interesting. Sculptures can be any size and made out of almost anything. Small sculptures are often made from clay and large ones are often made from stone or metal.
Sculptures are similar to statues, but often sculptures are abstract, which means they are interesting to look at but you can't tell what they are supposed to be, or they are deliberately made to be not an accurate copy of whatever the sculpture is supposed to be of.

S is for Shelf

A shelf is a horizontal piece of wood or metal that is attached to a wall so you can put things on it.
The plural of shelf is shelves.

S is for Shutters

Window shutters are like small doors that can be closed over a window. They can be used for security, for keeping out sunlight, or for keeping out the weather.

V is for Vase

A vase is a container without a lid, which is used to hold cut flowers. Vases are often very pretty. People have been making vases for thousands of years, usually made from clay and painted different colours.
A venetian blind is a type of window covering that is made up of lots of very thin metal or plastic slats. Venetian blinds have some controls so you can pull the blind up and down and tilt the slats.

W is for Wallpaper

Wallpaper is something you glue onto your walls to make them look nicer. Wallpaper is usually patterned or textured, and you cannot easily get the same effect with paint.

W is for Wind chime

A wind chime is an ornamental item that is hung outside in the wind. Wind chimes have parts that can move in the wind, and when they bump into each other they make a nice noise.
Wind chimes can be made from metal, glass, bells, ceramic or wood.
