W is for Wasp

Wasps are a group of flying, stinging insects that eat other insects. They usually eat pest insects like caterpillars, and can be very useful to gardeners and farmers who are trying to keep their crops safe. Wasp can sting many times, while bees can only sting once.

W is for Waste

You waste something when you have it, but you don't use it, or you use it for less important things. Someone might waste their money by buying lots of pairs of shoes and then complaining later they have no money for other things.
Waste is also leftovers, or something that is no longer needed and becomes trash. Anything you throw away is waste.
A watch is something you can use to tell the time on. Watches are small and usually have a strap on, so you can wear them around your wrist. Large watches that you hang on the wall are called clocks.
It is useful to know the time, so you know when to go to school, or have dinner, or watch your favorite TV show.
Watch means to look at something for a period of time. For example, you can watch a bird fly, watch a movie, or watch a sports game. It can also be used if you want to tell someone to look - "watch out!"

W is for Water

Water is the simplest thing you can drink, and is the best for you. All other drinks are just water with something else added to them. Your body is made up of more than half water, so if you don't drink enough you will dry out and become dehydrated.

W is for Water wheel

A water wheel is a large wheel with paddles or buckets around its edge. It turns when moving water pushes against these parts. Water wheels are usually built next to flowing water.

The turning wheel can power machines, such as millstones that grind grain into flour, or pumps that move water. Water wheels were used thousands of years ago, long before modern engines and electric motors. Some wheels turn when water flows over the top, while others turn when water hits the bottom.

W is for Waterfall

A waterfall happens when a creek or river flows over a cliff. Waterfalls can be tiny, only a few inches high, or they can be many hundreds of metres high.
Waterfalls form when a river flows over rocks that are different hardness. The river will erode the softer rock faster than the harder rock, and over a long time a waterfall gradually appears.
A watering can is used to water plants. It has a handle or two you can hold onto, and the spout often has a lot of holes so the water doesn't wash away the soil around your plants, it falls gently like rain.

W is for Waterlily

Water lilies are flowering plants that live in shallow water. They grow their roots in soil at the bottom of the water, and their leaves and flowers both float on top of the water.

You wave by moving one or both hands backwards and forwards. People wave to say hello or goodbye, or just to get other people's attention.

W is for Wave (Sea)

Waves on the surface of the sea or a lake are caused by wind blowing over the surface. The longer the wind has been blowing in the same direction and the deeper the water is, the larger the waves can get.
Waves usually only break and make the familiar frothy edge on the wave when they reach the shore. They sometimes break out at sea when they get too steep. Surfers like to surf on breaking waves. The wave in the picture is breaking onto a beach.
Originally wax was something bees made the inside of their hives out of, that people harvested to use. Wax is soft enough to be able to mold it into new shapes, but doesn't melt at room temperature. Liquid wax will burn with a bright light, and is used to make candles out of.
Things that are waxy and similar to beeswax are also called wax. Modern candles are made from paraffin wax. The stuff you sometimes scratch out of your ears is waxy and called earwax. Many cosmetics like lipstick are made mostly from wax.
